Madurai, December 5: A golden coloured statue of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister & AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa was erected next to AIADMK  founder M. G. Ramachandran's statue in Madurai's KK Nagar area. The statue was erected to mark Jayalalithaa's 3rd death anniversary. However, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) wants the statue to be removed at the earliest as it claims that permission was not obtained from the government for installing the statue.

DMK leader MLA Saravanan said the statue of Jayalalithaa should not be erected at a public place. "We have asked the administration to not grant permission for erecting the statue of Jayalalithaa in a public place. If they don't take necessary actions we will go to the court to stop this menace", Saravanan was quoted by ANI. It must be noted that in 2013, the Supreme Court had banned the installation of statues in public places. Jayalalithaa Death Mystery: Apollo Hospital Says IG KN Sathiyamurthy Ordered To Switch Off CCTV Cameras.

According to a report by TOI, the DMK workers that the KK Nagar area is a very important junction and vehicles have to pass through it. They further added saying that the statue of MGR is installed there causes heavy traffic congestion when the AIADMK observes his birth and death anniversaries and an additional statue would cause more problems.

Moreover, Jayalalithaa Memorial at Marina Beach in Chennai was decorated with flowers and people thronged to pay homage to 'Amma' on her 3rd death anniversary on Thursday. Jayalalithaa, fondly remembered as 'Amma' was admitted at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai for a long time in 2016. She breathed her last on December 5, 2016 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the hospital.
