JPSC-JSSC Row: BJP Calls Statewide 'Jharkhand Bandh' on August 11 After Police Crackdown on Student Protesters
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a statewide shutdown (bandh) in Jharkhand on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, following violent clashes between security personnel and job aspirants protesting over alleged irregularities in competitive recruitment examinations.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a statewide shutdown (bandh) in Jharkhand on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, following violent clashes between security personnel and job aspirants protesting over alleged irregularities in competitive recruitment examinations. The 16-hour shutdown is scheduled to begin at 8:00 AM and continue until midnight. Jharkhand BJP State President Aditya Sahu confirmed that emergency facilities, health services, and Kanwariyan pilgrims will be fully exempted from the bandh.
Assembly March Escalates into Clashes
The shutdown call follows a high-voltage confrontation outside the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly in Ranchi during a "Vidhan Sabha Gherao" march organized by job aspirants. Thousands of candidates demonstrating against the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) breached multiple security barricades and barbed-wire fencing to reach within 100 meters of the complex. Security forces deployed water cannons, tear gas shells, and lathis to push back the crowd. Several student protesters and multiple police officers sustained injuries during the physical skirmishes.
In the immediate aftermath, Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi and senior BJP lawmakers staged a protest near Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s residence, where they were briefly detained by police. Opposition leaders accused the state administration of using "barbaric force" to suppress democratic student movements instead of tackling corruption in public recruitment.
Government Stance and Ongoing Agitation
The march marked the culmination of a 17-day continuous agitation in Ranchi. Job seekers have been demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into recruitment exams conducted over recent years, alleging paper leaks and systemic corruption—specifically citing the JSSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) and 14th JPSC preliminary exams. Responding to the developments, Chief Minister Hemant Soren issued an open letter appealing to the students not to be misled by political narratives. The Chief Minister stated that his administration had already accepted most administrative demands raised by student delegations and stressed that an active Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe is making headway, including the recent arrest of former JPSC chairperson L. Khiangte.
The state government has instructed administrative and police officials across all 24 districts to step up security deployments to prevent public disruption during Tuesday's bandh.
