Former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Kannan Gopinathan has made a fresh public appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to accept his resignation after a delay spanning nearly seven years. Gopinathan originally stepped down from the civil service in August 2019 to protest the communications blackout and restrictions imposed in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370.
Tagging the prime minister on social media, the 41-year-old former bureaucrat wrote, “Dear PM Narendra Modi, now that you have started accepting resignations, please accept mine. Background of the 2019 Resignation
Gopinathan, a 2012-batch IAS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre, submitted his resignation while serving as the power secretary in Daman and Diu. He stated at the time that he could no longer remain in service while fundamental rights and freedoms were curtailed in Jammu and Kashmir. Following his exit, the Ministry of Home Affairs initiated disciplinary proceedings against him for unauthorised communication and dereliction of duty after he declined an order to resume work while his resignation remained under review. Status of the Pending Application
With his resignation still neither formally accepted nor rejected by the competent authorities, Gopinathan remains technically bound to the civil service roster without active duties or remuneration. Responding to social media users inquiring about his employment status, he remarked, “Nope. No salary, no suspension, nothing. Just sitting on it. Just like on every other issue.”
