Members of the house raised serious concerns about the initial handling and the complex nature of the alleged criminal conspiracy, prompting the chair to call for a dedicated, high-level probe.
Ketan Agrawal, who served as the director and chief marketing officer of the family-run real estate firm Success Group, died on June 18 after falling into a 300-foot-deep gorge at Lohagad Fort near Lonavla. While the incident was initially registered as an accidental fall during a trekking trip, subsequent police investigations revealed a premeditated murder plot. Pune Rural Police have since arrested Agrawal’s fiancée, 20-year-old Siya Goyal, and her associate, 22-year-old Chetan Chaudhary. According to investigators, Goyal and Chaudhary allegedly conspired to eliminate Agrawal because Goyal did not want to proceed with the family-arranged marriage. The couple had a grand Rs 17-crore wedding scheduled for November in Rajasthan.
The case took a turn when Agrawal's family raised persistent doubts about the accident theory, pointing out that he was an experienced trekker. Investigators reviewing technical data discovered that Goyal and Chaudhary had exchanged over 2,000 phone calls spanning roughly 238 hours in the six months leading up to the incident. CCTV footage retrieved from the fort's ticket counter also proved crucial. Further police disclosures indicate that multiple previous attempts had been made on Agrawal's life, including a staged incident on May 31 at the same location, which Goyal had covered up as an attempted rescue from a snake. The state government is expected to announce the structure and timeline of the mandated SIT probe in the coming days.
