Kolkata, December 6: The West Bengal police have booked a married man for marital rape after his wife accused him of forcing her into sex against her consent. The complainant also alleged that his husband and his family used to harass her for dowry, reported Times of India. According to police investigations, when the wedding was fixed, the woman's family was informed that the man is a senior official at a private bank. But after marriage, she realized that he is a junior employee at a small firm. The police officials while talking to TOI said, we are looking at all aspects of the case and confirming all the statements made by the woman. Meanwhile, the marital rape is not a crime in India, the woman's right organisation which has been demanding an amendment in Indian Penal Code (IPC) to include marital rape, said police registering FIR is the first step and the real test would be charge sheet filed by police.

Marital rape also known as spousal rape is the act of sexual intercourse without a partner's consent. Marital rape is considered a form of sexual abuse and domestic violence. Although, in India, there is no law to protect the woman against marital rape because of the high illiteracy rate, poverty and extreme religious beliefs.
