Mumbai, April 24:  The safety of women has always been an issue in our country and instead of addressing the main problem, every time, there has been a ridiculous statement thrown by a politician. From questioning the kind of clothes a women decides to wear, to an increase in consumption of beer among girls, to asking women not to venture out at night, we have heard every possible grotesque reasoning. These ridiculous statements have always made us doubt on the sanity of the spokesperson.

Here are 5 shocking statements from Indian politicians, where they have blamed women and porn for the rise in atrocities against women.

Bhupendra Singh, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister: 

Looking at the rise in crime against minor, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Bhupendra Singh has recently offered a quick fix solution- BAN PORN! Yes, he has written a letter to the Centre demanding a ban on the pornographic websites. According to ANI, Singh has been quoted as saying, "We think the reason for rising number of child rape and molestation cases is porn. We are contemplating banning porn in Madhya Pradesh, will approach Centre in the matter."

Babulal Gaur, party veteran and former Madhya Pradesh CM:

“It is a social crime which depends on the man and the woman. It is sometimes right and sometimes wrong,” He further went on to say that rape can only be considered to have been committed if it is reported to police.

Dharambir Goyat, Congress Spokesperson:

In an outrageous comment, Congress spokesperson Dharambir Goyat blamed women and said, "I don't feel any hesitation in saying that 90 per cent of the girls want to have sex intentionally but they don't know that they would be gang raped further as they find some lusty and pervasive people in the way ahead."

Botsa Satyanarayana, Former Congress minister: 

Around the occurrence of the horrific Delhi rape Botsa Satyanarayana had said, "Just because India achieved freedom at midnight does not mean that women can venture out after dark. They should ensure that they do not board buses with few passengers."

Abu Azmi, Samajwadi Party (SP) Leader:

Abu Azmi time and again has passed sexist comments where he has put the onus on women when it comes to safety. One such shocking statement, which he made during the Nirbhaya case was-"Women Should not venture out with men who are not relatives. What is the need for roaming at night with men? This should be stopped, such incidents (As the Delhi rape case) happen due to influence of Western culture."

According to Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election 48 MLAs and MPs in India have declared cases of crimes against women.  These crimes include charges related to assault or criminal force to women to outrage her modesty (IPC Section- 354); kidnapping, abducting or inducting women to compel her marriage, etc. (IPC Section- 366); rape (IPC Section- 376); husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty (IPC Section- 498A); buying minor for purpose of prostitution (IPC Section- 373); and word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman (IPC Section-509).
