A 35-year-old woman was allegedly molested and her husband assaulted by two unidentified motorcycle-borne men on the EM Bypass in Kolkata during the early hours of Thursday. According to the complaint filed at the Survey Park police station, the couple was returning home to Sammilani Park on a bicycle when the attack occurred.
The victim's husband was riding the bicycle while she was seated on the rear carrier. As they neared the Mukundapur crossing, two men on a motorcycle approached them from behind and abruptly pulled the woman’s orna (dupatta). The sudden pull nearly caused the couple to lose their balance and fall off the cycle. When the husband stopped the bicycle to object, the two men physically assaulted him, hitting him with punches and slaps. The couple began shouting for help, drawing the attention of nearby passers-by who alerted the on-duty police. Seeing people approach the scene, the attackers fled the spot on their motorcycle. The victims, who are originally from the Raidighi area of South 24 Parganas and currently reside near Ambuja Gate 4, stated that they did not know the attackers. However, the husband noted that he would be able to identify both men if brought before him, as he had a clear view of them before they escaped. The Kolkata Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) detailing charges of wrongful restraint and physical assault committed in furtherance of common intention. Investigating officers have initiated a scan of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras located along the EM Bypass, the surrounding service roads, and near the Mukundapur crossing. Cops are tracking the route taken by the accused to identify the registration number of the motorcycle. Statements from the victims and witnesses are currently being recorded to map out the sequence of events. No arrests have been made so far.
