New Delhi, July 27: The Delhi High Court on Friday observed that petitions should be filed for the welfare of the homeless, and not to seek land for the dead. The Delhi High Court's comment came while hearing a plea seeking examination of available space in cemeteries in Delhi to find an amicable solution to lack of burial space for Christians in the capital.

Dismissing the plea, the High Court observed that land can be utilised for basic infrastructure facilities instead of being allocated for graveyards. Check the ANI tweet describing the High Court observation below:

The Delhi High Court's stringent observation comes in the wake of reports which describe Delhi as the "capital of the homeless" in the world. A Hindustan Times report mentions that the total number of homeless people in India are more than the overall population of Mauritius.

The situation in Delhi is so grave that shelter homes have to be put up in Delhi to protect the homeless from the lethal Delhi winter. A survey by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the year 2010 put the number of homeless in Delhi to 56,000. The numbers have only increased, and according to an estimate there are close to one lakh people homeless in Delhi.
