The three-member Lok Sabha probe panel noted that large amounts of unaccounted ₹500 denomination currency notes were recovered from a storeroom at his official residence located at 30, Tughlaq Crescent, New Delhi. The panel highlighted that Justice Varma’s explanation regarding the discovered currency “did not exhibit the candour, transparency and institutional responsibility expected in the circumstances.” It also flagged that the evidentiary condition of the storeroom was altered prior to official sealing, leaving the subsequent non-availability of the cash unexplained.
The matter first surfaced on the night of March 14 last year, when a fire broke out in a storeroom at the judge's residence. Firefighters called to extinguish the blaze allegedly uncovered massive stacks of partially burnt currency notes, prompting an official investigation and subsequent removal proceedings in Parliament.
Justice Varma was serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court when the incident occurred and was later repatriated to his parent court, the Allahabad High Court. He has since tendered his resignation, which renders the parliamentary removal proceedings virtually infructuous, though his resignation is yet to be formally notified by the Ministry of Law and Justice. The inquiry committee, which had submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in May, recommended that further action be taken against the judge in accordance with law.
