The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Lucknow district administration and police over the devastating fire that claimed 15 lives at a multi-storey commercial building in Aliganj, Uttar Pradesh. Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, the Commission has directed authorities to submit an action taken report within two weeks and stressed the need for strict enforcement of fire and safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies. The Commission issued notices to the District Magistrate and the Commissioner of Police, Lucknow, seeking details of the investigation, rescue efforts and the measures taken following the June 22 fire.

In its observation, the NHRC said that if the reported facts are accurate, the incident raises serious concerns regarding the protection of human rights and the implementation of safety standards in commercial buildings. Fire Claimed 15 Lives

The fire broke out in a multi-storey commercial building in Aliganj, where students were attending coaching classes. The blaze resulted in the deaths of 15 people and left several others injured, prompting widespread concern over fire safety compliance in educational and commercial establishments. Following the tragedy, the NHRC directed authorities to ensure the strict implementation of existing fire safety guidelines across public and commercial premises.

The incident has also renewed scrutiny of Uttar Pradesh's fire safety regulations, including the state's requirement for periodic electrical safety inspections and renewal of fire safety clearances for commercial establishments. Questions have been raised about whether these norms were effectively enforced before the Aliganj fire. Lucknow Fire: Massive Blaze at Ground Floor Shop Spreads to Coaching Centre; Video Shows Students Jumping From 1st Floor.

Investigation and Accountability

The Aliganj fire has intensified the debate over fire safety standards in high-footfall buildings across the country. In the aftermath of the incident, legal and policy discussions have gained momentum, including calls for a stronger national framework governing fire and life safety in schools, coaching centres, hospitals and other public establishments.
