An elderly couple in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, has stepped back from the brink of divorce after more than five decades of marriage following police counselling. The 70-year-old wife and her 75-year-old husband approached local police after their relationship deteriorated. The pair have four sons, two of whom are lawyers and two who run shops.
The sons divided the parents between them, with two taking in their mother and the other two supporting their father. Tensions escalated recently when the wife fell ill and asked her husband for money to buy medicine. He refused, triggering a fresh dispute that brought them to the point of seeking a formal separation.
Bulandshahr police called both parties in for counselling. Officers mediated the matter and helped them reach an agreement under which the husband will provide his wife with INR 5,000 every month. The police also secured an assurance from the husband that he would not create further difficulties for his wife.
The intervention has been welcomed by many who followed the case, with observers noting that conversation and practical support proved more effective than legal proceedings in preserving a long marriage.
