The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its crackdown on food-safety violations in Mumbai, suspending the food business licence of a McDonald’s outlet in Colaba and taking action against 12 other establishments, including the Bombay Presidency Radio Club and Khar Gymkhana. The action followed inspections that found alleged hygiene, pest-control, food-handling and infrastructure violations, according to a report.
The latest measures are part of an ongoing enforcement drive led by Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, with restaurants, hotels, clubs and other food businesses being inspected for compliance with food-safety standards. McDonald’s Colaba Licence Suspended
The FDA suspended the FSSAI licence of the McDonald’s outlet at Colaba after a reinspection found that several deficiencies identified during an earlier inspection had not been rectified. Officials reportedly found an active pest infestation, including live cockroaches, along with other sanitation and food-handling concerns. The inspection also flagged problems involving food storage, refrigeration and cleanliness in areas used for food preparation. The action means the outlet cannot carry out food-related activities covered by the suspended licence until the regulatory requirements are met.
Radio Club Also Faces Action
The Bombay Presidency Radio Club in Colaba is among the prominent establishments whose food licence has been suspended by the FDA. During an inspection on August 19, officials reportedly found serious hygiene lapses, including pest infestation and contamination risks. The inspection found a dead cockroach and live flies in areas connected with food operations, along with other sanitation concerns.
The FDA also flagged issues involving infrastructure, storage of food and chemicals, and the condition of food-preparation and utensil-washing areas. The action against the Radio Club forms part of the wider enforcement drive targeting establishments that fail to meet prescribed food-safety and hygiene standards.
18 of 20 Deficiencies Remained
According to the FDA findings reported by NDTV Profit, the Colaba outlet had earlier been issued an improvement notice listing 20 deficiencies. During the subsequent inspection, officials found that 18 of those issues had not been adequately addressed.
The inspection reportedly found live cockroaches, inadequate pest-control measures and food waste in areas close to food storage and preparation.
Officials also raised concerns about refrigeration temperatures, the condition of cleaning materials and the handling of food-contact surfaces. The FDA had received a compliance report from the establishment claiming that corrective measures had been taken. However, the subsequent inspection found that several violations continued to exist.
Khar Gymkhana Among 13 Establishments
Separately, the Maharashtra FDA announced the suspension of licences of 13 food establishments, including the Radio Club and Khar Gymkhana, for alleged violations of hygiene and food-safety norms.
The action covers hotels, clubs and other establishments involved in food-related activities. The regulator has been carrying out inspections across Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, focusing on sanitation, pest control, food storage, temperature management and safe food-handling practices.
Wider Food-Safety Enforcement Drive
The latest action follows several rounds of inspections conducted across the state in recent weeks. On August 13, officials inspected 86 establishments involved in food storage, sale and delivery through online platforms. The FDA said 14 licences were suspended, while 60 establishments were issued improvement notices.
The department has also taken action against restaurants, hotels, clubs, bakeries and quick-commerce facilities after finding alleged violations involving hygiene, refrigeration, pest control and food storage. Earlier inspections in Mumbai had also resulted in licence suspensions after officials reported rodents, cockroaches and other sanitation problems at food establishments.
FDA Says Compliance Is the Focus
The Maharashtra FDA's continuing inspections are aimed at ensuring that food businesses comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act and related regulations. The regulator has indicated that establishments found violating food-safety requirements can face improvement notices, licence suspension and other legal action depending on the nature and seriousness of the violations.
The latest cases involving McDonald’s Colaba, the Radio Club and Khar Gymkhana underline the FDA's expanding scrutiny of both large commercial food outlets and established clubs and hospitality venues across Mumbai. Further inspections are expected to continue as part of the state's ongoing food-safety enforcement campaign.
