Mumbai, February 5: A significant forensic breakthrough has led to the arrest of a man in Mumbai for the rape and impregnation of his minor daughter, who has a physical disability. Following a complex investigation that involved DNA testing for 17 potential suspects, the forensic report confirmed the biological father was the perpetrator.
According to NDTV, the investigation began several months ago when the minor survivor, who is non-verbal and has a physical disability, was found to be pregnant. Due to her inability to identify her attacker, the Mumbai Police initially struggled to pinpoint a suspect. In an exhaustive effort to secure justice, authorities collected DNA samples from 16 men in the victim’s immediate circle and neighborhood before a final test on the father confirmed a match. 17 Suspects DNA-Tested, Father Emerges As Sole Match in Mumbai
Local police initially suspected several individuals, including neighbours and distant relatives who had access to the victim’s home. Each of the 16 suspects was cleared after their DNA did not match the biological evidence collected from the newborn. The breakthrough came only after investigators turned their focus toward the immediate family members living in the household.
The forensic laboratory in Mumbai prioritised the case given the sensitivity and the age of the survivor. The final report, received this week, proved with scientific certainty that the father was responsible for the assault. Following the confirmation, the police immediately took the man into custody under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accused has been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the POCSO Act, which carry stringent penalties for aggravated sexual assault on a minor. Police officials stated that the father had initially attempted to deflect suspicion onto outsiders and had even cooperated with the early stages of the investigation to maintain his innocence.
"The DNA evidence provided the conclusive proof we needed in a case where the survivor was unable to provide a statement," a senior police official remarked. The accused is currently being held in judicial custody pending further legal proceedings.
The minor survivor is currently under the care of state-run child welfare services and her mother. Given her disability and the trauma sustained, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has been tasked with ensuring she receives specialised medical and psychological support.
Authorities have also moved to ensure the safety of the infant born from the assault. Social workers are working closely with the family to determine the best long-term care plan for both the minor and the child, while the legal team prepares for a fast-track trial to ensure swift justice.
