Pune: Father Beats Son to Death Over Demand for Mutton Curry During Shravan

A 30-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his father in Pune's Warje-Malwadi area following an argument over cooking mutton curry during the ongoing holy month of Shravan. Police have arrested both parents in connection with the incident, with the mother accused of attempting to conceal the crime and destroy evidence. The police identified the deceased as Mahesh Bhagwat Gaikwad. The accused parents have been identified as Bhagwat Suryabhan Gaikwad, 64, and Parvati Bhagwat Gaikwad, 60.

Dispute Over Non-Vegetarian Food

According to the Warje-Malwadi police, the incident occurred at the family's residence in Ramnagar, Warje-Malwadi, between the night of August 24 and the early morning hours of August 25. Mahesh, who was unemployed and suffered from chronic alcohol addiction, reportedly arrived home in an intoxicated state and demanded that his family prepare a traditional meat dish (mutton kalvan). His parents refused, explaining that the household was strictly abstaining from non-vegetarian food in observance of the holy month of Shravan. The refusal triggered an argument between Mahesh and his parents. As the verbal altercation escalated, Bhagwat Gaikwad allegedly assaulted his son, striking him repeatedly on the face and head. The injuries sustained during the physical assault proved fatal.

Cover-Up Attempt and Arrests

Following the fatal altercation, the parents allegedly attempted to cover up the crime rather than contacting emergency services or the police. Police reported that Parvati Gaikwad, who works as a nurse, cleaned bloodstains from the scene to eliminate physical evidence. Early the next morning, she informed her elder son, Ganesh, claiming that Mahesh was unresponsive and cold. However, upon noticing fresh injuries on his brother's face and head, Ganesh grew suspicious and alerted the police.

An initial case of accidental death was recorded before a post-mortem examination at Sassoon General Hospital revealed that Mahesh died from blunt-force trauma to the head and asphyxiation. Following custodial interrogation, the Warje-Malwadi police registered a murder case. Bhagwat Gaikwad was arrested on charges of murder, while Parvati Gaikwad was taken into custody for her alleged role in destroying evidence and misleading investigators. Police officials noted that Mahesh's severe alcohol addiction had long been a source of domestic friction. His addiction and lack of steady employment had previously led to a separation and subsequent divorce from his wife of 10 years, who resides elsewhere with their two children. Mahesh had been living independently but frequently visited his parents' home for meals, often resulting in domestic disputes.
