An intense spell of overnight heavy rainfall has knocked down trees and caused widespread waterlogging across Mumbai. Emergency crews, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, are currently conducting rescue operations after a large tree collapsed onto a car in Dadar East. The sudden downpour, marking the arrival of the southwest monsoon, has prompted authorities to issue travel advisories for several low-lying sectors.
The heavy rains led to rapid water accumulation in vulnerable areas, including the Andheri Subway, Hindmata, Malad Subway, Kings Circle, and parts of Sion. Due to deep flooding, local police temporarily closed the Andheri underpass to vehicular traffic to ensure public safety. Civic staff remain stationed at flooded crossings to redirect motorists away from dangerous water levels. Alongside the vehicle damage in Dadar East, multiple incidents of uprooted trees and broken branches have been reported across the financial capital. Municipal workers are actively clearing debris to restore traffic flow on major arterial roads. According to the latest advisory from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre in Mumbai, a weather alert remains active for the city. Forecasters have predicted continued thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and intense to very intense spells of rain through the day.
The weather agency has also warned of strong, gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 60 km/h. For today, local weather readings indicate ambient temperatures holding steady around 27°C, with a high chance of sustained light to moderate rainfall throughout the daytime hours.
The intense precipitation follows a delayed arrival of the southwest monsoon, which officially hit the Maharashtra coast 13 days past its traditional normal onset date of June 10. Automated weather stations in the city registered substantial rainfall totals between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. Malwani in Malad recorded the highest volume at 271 mm, while Powai, Kandivali, and Borivali all crossed the 230 mm mark in an eight-hour window.
