According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the reservoir breached its overflow level at approximately 5:30 AM on July 1, marking a significant milestone in the city's current monsoon cycle.

The lake, which has a total storage capacity of 545 crore (5,455 million) litres, swelled rapidly over the past 24 hours as intense rainfall hit the city and its eastern suburbs. While the sight of the overflowing lake draws local attention, civic officials clarified that the excess water naturally drains into the Mithi River before emptying into the Arabian Sea. Constructed in 1890, the artificial reservoir spans a water surface area of roughly 2.23 square kilometers when completely full, drawing from a catchment area of 6.61 square kilometers. Unlike Mumbai’s primary water grid, Powai Lake does not contribute to the city’s domestic drinking supply. Instead, its reserves are managed by the BMC specifically to meet industrial demands within the commercial capital.

The heavy rain spell has provided a marginal but crucial boost to Mumbai's primary drinking water infrastructure. The city relies on seven inland reservoirs—Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vihar, and Tulsi—which together hold a total capacity of over 14.47 lakh million litres. Prior to this downpour, a delayed monsoon had depleted the combined useful content of these seven lakes to a critical 6.75%. Following Tuesday night's heavy rains, the total stock recovered slightly to 7.18%. The downpour resulted in severe waterlogging in low-lying localities, including Dadar, Sion, and Kurla. In the western suburbs, the Andheri Subway had to be temporarily shut down due to rising water levels, forcing traffic diversions to nearby flyovers. Commuters also faced extensive delays on the Western Express Highway during peak morning hours due to water accumulation and minor tree falls.

Civic personnel remain deployed at vulnerable flooding spots across the city to manage drainage systems and assist stranded motorists. Local authorities have advised citizens to restrict non-essential travel during periods of heavy, localized downpours.
