An 18-year-old man died after a tree branch fell on him in Mumbai's Aarey Colony during heavy rain on Sunday, adding to a series of monsoon-related fatalities. Hours earlier, a 63-year-old man was killed in Kurla after a tree collapsed on him. The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai as heavy rainfall and strong winds continue to affect the city.
An 18-year-old man was killed after a tree branch fell on him during heavy rainfall in Mumbai's Aarey Colony on Sunday, July 5, the latest in a series of monsoon-related fatalities reported across the city. The incident comes as relentless rain and strong winds continue to uproot trees, disrupt daily life and increase safety risks across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The deceased was identified as Kumar Hasan Raza Jahangir Alam Syed. According to officials, he had travelled to Aarey Colony with a group of friends on a motorcycle. While passing through Unit No. 13 in Goregaon (East), a large tree branch snapped during heavy rainfall and struck him on the head.
Teen Succumbs to Head Injuries
Syed was immediately rushed to Balaji Hospital in Malad (East), where doctors declared him brought dead. Hospital authorities confirmed that he had suffered fatal head injuries in the incident.
The latest fatality comes amid a series of rain-related accidents in Mumbai as heavy rainfall and gusty winds continue to uproot trees and damage infrastructure across the city.
Second Tree Fall Death Reported on Sunday
Earlier on Sunday, a 63-year-old man, Yunus Kundawala, was killed after a tree collapsed on him in Kurla West's Naupada area.
He was rescued from beneath the fallen tree and taken to Fauzia Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. CCTV footage of the incident showed the tree crashing onto the victim. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) teams later removed the tree and cleared the area.
Multiple Tree Fall Incidents Across Mumbai
The city has witnessed multiple tree-fall incidents over the past few days.
Strong winds uprooted another tree in Bandra East, damaging several parked vehicles, while another tree collapsed near industrialist Mukesh Ambani's security convoy, briefly disrupting traffic before civic authorities cleared the obstruction.
Monsoon Fatalities Increase as IMD Issues Red Alert
The recent incidents add to a growing list of monsoon-related fatalities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. On June 30, an 11-year-old boy was killed after a peepal tree fell on a school bus, while another man died in Mira-Bhayandar after being struck by a falling tree.
On July 2, a 55-year-old man lost his life after falling into an open manhole in Sakinaka during heavy rain.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert as adverse weather conditions persist.
Mumbai experiences frequent tree-fall incidents during the southwest monsoon, particularly during spells of intense rainfall and gusty winds. Civic authorities routinely deploy emergency teams to clear fallen trees and restore traffic movement, while residents are advised to stay indoors during periods of severe weather and avoid areas with large trees, waterlogging or damaged infrastructure.
