Heavy monsoon rainfall over Mumbai and neighbouring catchment areas has significantly improved the cityтАЩs water reserves, with the combined stock in the seven reservoirs rising from around 28% to 41.36% in recent days. The sharp increase has pushed Vihar and Tulsi lakes to full capacity, with both reservoirs beginning to overflow on Tuesday night, July 7.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the cityтАЩs seven water-supplying lakes recorded a 12.44 percentage point increase in usable water stock in 24 hours and a 24.44 percentage point rise over 48 hours. The latest figures show the reservoirs collectively hold 5,98,589 million litres (ML) of usable water against a total live storage capacity of 14,47,363 ML. Vihar and Tulsi Lakes Reach Full Capacity
The latest spell of intense rainfall has brought two of MumbaiтАЩs reservoirs to full capacity. Vihar Lake reached 100% capacity after receiving 77 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. The lake is currently storing 27,698 ML of water and has recorded 1,564 mm of seasonal rainfall.
Tulsi Lake also reached 100% capacity, holding 8,046 ML of water. It received 122 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours and has recorded the highest seasonal rainfall among MumbaiтАЩs reservoirs at 2,126 mm. According to BMC data, Vihar Lake began overflowing at 9 pm on July 7, followed by Tulsi Lake at 11:43 pm.┬аMumbai Rains: Powai Lake Overflows as Heavy Rainfall Lashes City (Watch Video).
Reservoir Levels Rise Sharply After Heavy Rainfall
Among MumbaiтАЩs seven reservoirs, several recorded significant increases following continuous rainfall in catchment areas.
- Modak Sagar is 72.14% full, holding 93,003 ML of water. It received 251 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
- Tansa Lake reached 69.35% capacity, storing 1,00,614 ML after receiving 319 mm of rainfall.
- Bhatsa, MumbaiтАЩs largest water source, is at 35.59% capacity, with 2,55,202 ML of usable storage.
- Middle Vaitarna is at 34.68%, holding 67,118 ML.
- Upper Vaitarna is at 20.66%, with 46,908 ML of water.
Middle Vaitarna records biggest rise
The heavy rainfall resulted in a notable rise in reservoir levels over 24 hours. Middle Vaitarna recorded the highest increase, rising by 4.97 metres. It was followed by Bhatsa at 4.60 metres, Modak Sagar at 3.56 metres, Tansa at 2.41 metres, Upper Vaitarna at 0.89 metre, Tulsi at 0.31 metre and Vihar at 0.15 metre.
The Middle Vaitarna WSCPO gate has remained open since 11 am on June 23, according to authorities. Controlled water releases from Upper Vaitarna, which began on June 22, stopped on July 6 at 10 am.
BMC says rainfall improved water availability
The BMC said the latest rainfall has helped reservoirs recover after relatively subdued monsoon activity in June.
The civic body posted: тАЬDue to the rainfall that occurred in the 24 hours from 6 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, to Wednesday, July 8, 2026, the water stock in the 7 reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai has reached 41.36%. In the last 24 hours, there has been a 12.44% increase in the water stock in the reservoirs. Additionally, there has been a 24.44% increase in 48 hours,' the BMC posted.тАЭ
The seven lakes supplying MumbaiтАЩs water needs, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi and Middle Vaitarna, are located across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Nashik districts and rely heavily on monsoon rainfall for replenishment.
Mumbai Weather Forecast: Rain┬аExpected to Ease
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall intensity in Mumbai, Thane and nearby areas is expected to reduce over the next few days.
After a week of yellow and orange alerts due to heavy rainfall, Mumbai is expected to receive light to moderate rain between July 8 and July 11. No specific weather alert has been issued for the city during this period.
The IMD forecast said Mumbai will experience a тАЬgenerally cloudy sky with intermittent light to moderate rain in the city and suburbs.тАЭ Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain around 32 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius. The BMC has also confirmed that schools and colleges will remain open as no adverse weather conditions are expected.
