Heavy monsoon rainfall continued to disrupt life across Maharashtra on Monday, with two men drowning at the Gadeshwar Dam complex in Navi Mumbai's Panvel and another person critically injured after a tree branch fell in Thane. The incidents come as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, strong winds and hazardous conditions.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also issued a weather advisory urging residents to remain cautious amid forecasts of intense showers, gusty winds and high tides.

Two Men Swept Away at Gadeshwar Dam

The drowning incident occurred on Sunday at the Gadeshwar Dam complex in Panvel after two men entered the water despite strong currents caused by heavy rainfall in the Matheran hills.

Officials said water flow had intensified significantly due to continuous rain in the catchment area. Rescue attempts were made using a stick, but both men were swept away by the current. So far, the body of one of the victims has been recovered, while police and rescue teams continue searching for the second missing person.

CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, showing the two men swimming and attempting to cross the water body despite the strong current. The video highlights the dangerous conditions created by the swollen dam following heavy rainfall in the region.

Authorities have repeatedly appealed to visitors to avoid entering rivers, dams and waterfalls during the monsoon due to rapidly changing water levels.

Tree Branch Injures Man in Thane

In a separate incident on Monday, a person sustained critical injuries after a large tree branch fell in front of the transport office in the Huzuri area of Thane's Wagle Estate.

The injured person was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where treatment is underway. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the victim's condition.

IMD Red Alert Remains in Effect

The latest incidents come as heavy rain continues to affect Mumbai and surrounding districts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also warned of intense showers, strong winds and high tides, advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert.
