Lucknow, January 29: The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) is considering a formal proposal to ban pet dogs and cats from all public parks under its jurisdiction. The move, announced on Thursday, January 29, aims to address increasing complaints regarding hygiene, public safety, and the inconvenience caused to morning walkers and children. If approved, the regulation would effectively end the long-standing practice of residents using municipal green spaces for walking their pets.
Municipal Commissioner Chandra Mohan Garg stated that the civic body has received numerous grievances concerning pet litter and incidents of aggressive behaviour by dogs. Officials argue that public parks are intended for recreational use by citizens, and the presence of pets has led to deteriorating cleanliness and safety concerns. The proposal is expected to be tabled in the upcoming executive committee meeting for a final decision. ‘Life Imprisonment’ for Dogs in Uttar Pradesh: Strays Who Bite Humans Twice To Be Kept at Animal Centre for Lifetime.
Reasons for the Proposed Pet Ban in Prayagraj Parks
The primary motivation behind the ban is the lack of "pet etiquette" among owners. Civic officials noted that pet waste often goes uncleaned, creating health hazards and unpleasant conditions for other park visitors. Furthermore, there have been reports of minor altercations between pet owners and visitors who feel threatened by unleashed animals.
Authorities also highlighted that the maintenance of flower beds and manicured lawns has become difficult due to pets digging or damaging the greenery. The PMC believes that by restricting pets, it can ensure a more sanitised environment for children and elderly citizens who frequent these spaces. Reactions from Pet Owners and Residents
The proposal has sparked an immediate debate among residents. Pet owners have expressed frustration, arguing that there are no dedicated "pet parks" in the city and that a blanket ban is an extreme measure. They suggest that the corporation should instead implement fines for littering or mandate the use of leashes.
On the other hand, several morning walker associations have welcomed the move. Supporters of the ban claim that it will make public spaces more inclusive for those who are fearful of dogs or allergic to pet dander. They have urged the PMC to enforce the rules strictly once the proposal is passed.
Prayagraj is not the first city to move toward such restrictions. Several municipal bodies in the National Capital Region (NCR), including Lucknow and Ghaziabad, have previously introduced similar guidelines or designated specific timings for pet walks. If the PMC proceeds with the ban, Prayagraj will join a growing list of Indian cities implementing stricter "pet policies" to manage urban livestock and domestic animals. For now, pet owners are encouraged to continue using public spaces responsibly while the municipal body finalizes the new regulations.
