Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district today, August 1. Developed by the GMR Group, the greenfield aviation project is viewed by the Andhra Pradesh government as a major transformational asset designed to drive regional economic development. Built at a cost of nearly INR 5,000 crore, the facility is aimed at serving as a strategic catalyst for industrial expansion, employment generation, enhanced trade, and research across the North Andhra region. Commercial operations for the airport are scheduled to begin on August 17.

Capacity and Infrastructure Highlights

During the inauguration, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu walked the Prime Minister through the key facets and technological capabilities of the newly completed aviation hub.

Following the inauguration in Bhogapuram, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stones for and dedicate multiple development projects worth nearly INR 18,000 crore across the southern state. The extensive infrastructure push highlights ongoing governmental efforts to bolster connectivity, upgrade regional transport networks, and encourage targeted industrial investments in Andhra Pradesh.
