A 30-year-old man has been arrested in Gujarat's Rajkot for allegedly murdering a person he met through social media after discovering that the individual, who had posed as a woman online, was actually a man, police said.
The case surfaced after a decomposed body dressed in women's clothing and wearing jewellery was found near Muscat Gate in Shapar on June 24. Investigators initially believed the victim was a woman, but a post-mortem examination revealed the deceased was a man, triggering a murder investigation.
After examining nearly 100 CCTV camera recordings, police identified the victim as Chandan, a 26-year-old native of Bihar. The accused, identified as Piyush Bablu Kharwar (30), originally from Uttar Pradesh, was subsequently arrested. Victim Allegedly Used Fake Female Social Media Profiles
According to police, Chandan allegedly created fake social media profiles using female identities and came into contact with Piyush online. The two reportedly developed a relationship, following which Chandan travelled to Hyderabad, where Piyush worked in aluminium fabrication.
Investigators alleged that the pair lived together for around three months and even underwent a symbolic marriage ceremony. Police claim Piyush later discovered Chandan was male, leading to a dispute and the end of the relationship. Haryana: Man Dies by Suicide During Video Call With Partner in Faridabad.
Police Allege Years of Pursuit Led to Fatal Confrontation
According to investigators, Piyush changed locations across several states over the next three years in an attempt to avoid Chandan. However, police alleged that Chandan repeatedly tracked him down, insisted on staying with him and was involved in frequent confrontations.
Police said Piyush had recently moved to Padvala village near Shapar to stay with his younger brother. Investigators alleged that Chandan again located him there, leading to another altercation. During the confrontation, Piyush allegedly assaulted Chandan, who became semi-conscious, before taking him to another location and fatally striking him on the head with a stone.
The accused has been arrested, and further investigation into the case is underway.
