Dehradun, August 21: Gagandeep Singh, a Sikh Sub-Inspector has been honoured by the state government for protecting a Muslim boy from being assaulted by a mob in Uttarakhand’s Rampur at a temple in May this year. On the occasion of Independence Day on 15th August, DGP Anil Rathudi awarded the ‘Frontier Service Respect Mark’ medal to Singh.

Singh was praised for his heroic act of saving a Muslim man from the mob. Pictures and videos of the policeman holding a man close to his chest trying to protect him is viral on the internet. The officer was informed about unrest near a temple in Ramnagar following which he rushed to the place where a group of men were attacking the Muslim boy who was seen with his Hindu girlfriend.

According to reports, the mob created commotion by first harassing the couple. The temple is which is situated 14-15 km away from the main town is quite popular. In the video, the police officer could be seen holding the boy close to him when the mob tries to hit him. Even Bollywood celebrities including Farhan Akhtar, Vidya Balan and Siddharth Malhotra praised him for his brave act.
