Security Officer Also Hurt
A police officer belonging to Badal's security detail also suffered injuries while responding to the incident, according to the initial reports. The circumstances of the officer's injury and his current condition were not immediately available. Authorities are expected to examine security arrangements at the religious complex and establish how the attacker approached Badal. Sukhbir Singh Badal Was Visiting Nanded
Badal, who heads the SAD, was in Nanded and had visited Takht Sri Hazur Sahib earlier on Thursday. The shrine is one of the five Takhts, or seats of Sikh religious authority, and has a significant connection with Guru Gobind Singh. The attack therefore occurred during a visit to a major Sikh pilgrimage centre rather than during a political programme.
Political Background
Sukhbir Singh Badal remains a prominent figure in Punjab politics and is the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal. He has also served as Punjab's deputy chief minister. The incident comes days after Badal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament, a meeting that triggered speculation about a possible revival of the BJP-SAD alliance ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. There has been no official confirmation of a renewed alliance.
Investigation Underway
Police are expected to investigate the motive behind the attack, identify the assailant and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. As of the latest initial reports, Badal had been taken to hospital and further information about his medical condition and the circumstances of the attack was awaited.
