A 27-year-old man has been arrested in Kolkata for allegedly sending a threatening email targeting West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and warning of a possible suicide bomb attack. Police said the email also mentioned the involvement of terrorist group Al Qaeda, prompting authorities to launch an immediate investigation, as reported by TOI. The accused, identified as Hasnain Iqbal from the Garden Reach area of Kolkata, was arrested on Saturday following a probe by Kolkata Police’s cyber cell and Special Task Force (STF). Investigators said the threat mail was treated seriously because of the nature of the claims made in the message.

Threat Email Triggered Security Response

According to police officials, the email warned of a suicide bomb attack allegedly planned with assistance from Al Qaeda. Investigators traced the origin of the message through technical surveillance and digital tracking before detaining the suspect. ‘Vande Mataram Will Be Made Mandatory in All Govt Schools From May 18; Appeal Made to Private Schools’: West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari.

Officials said the accused allegedly used a woman’s identity while sending the email. During preliminary questioning, investigators suspect the message may have been sent to falsely implicate the woman whose details were used.

Police have not publicly disclosed the full contents of the email due to security concerns. Authorities are continuing to examine the accused’s electronic devices and online activity to determine whether anyone else was involved. West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari Names First-Time MLA Rathindra Bose as BJP Nominee for Speaker’s Post.

Investigation Underway

Senior police officers said the matter is being investigated from both criminal and security perspectives because the email referred to a terror-linked attack. Cyber experts and intelligence agencies are also assisting in the probe.

The arrest comes amid heightened political and security attention in West Bengal following recent incidents involving individuals associated with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Earlier this month, the murder investigation of Adhikari’s former aide Chandranath Rath was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Security Concerns in Bengal

In recent weeks, the West Bengal administration has also intensified action on prison security, cyber monitoring and organised crime investigations across the state. Authorities have maintained that threats involving public officials are being handled with increased scrutiny. Police said further legal action in the email threat case will depend on forensic examination of digital evidence and findings from the ongoing investigation.
