A 25-year-old man allegedly attacked in the neck during a drunken brawl among relatives at a funeral in Kadambathur, Tiruvallur district, died at a hospital on Wednesday, August 26. The deceased was identified as L Manikandan. Police, who initially registered a case of attempt to murder following Tuesday’s attack, have now altered it to murder after his death and intensified efforts to trace the accused.

According to Kadambathur police, the relatives had gathered at Agram on Tuesday for the funeral of an elderly woman who had died of age-related illness, TNIE reported. The gathering was held for the funeral of the elderly woman, but the situation turned tense when an argument broke out among those consuming liquor near the burial ground.

During the quarrel, one of the men allegedly attacked Manikandan with a weapon, causing serious injuries to his neck. Manikandan was immediately taken by ambulance to the Tiruvallur Government Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Despite medical treatment, Manikandan succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment on Wednesday. Following his death, the Kadambathur police altered the case from attempt to murder to murder. Police have intensified their efforts to identify and trace the accused involved in the attack. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the brawl and the fatal attack is continuing.

Relatives Stage Road Roko

Meanwhile, Manikandan’s relatives staged a road roko on the Tiruvallur-Sunguvarchatram highway, demanding the immediate arrest of those involved in the incident. Police held talks with the protesters and assured them that the accused would be arrested. Following the assurance, the protesters withdrew their agitation.

Police are continuing efforts to trace the accused and establish the sequence of events that led to the fatal attack. The case has now been registered as murder following Manikandan’s death, with further investigation underway.
