Telangana: 65-Year-Old Woman Assaulted Over Black Magic Suspicion, 14 Booked
A 65-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by her neighbours after being accused of practising black magic in Nomula village within the Manchal mandal of Ranga Reddy district. Police have booked 14 villagers in connection with the incident following a formal complaint.
A 65-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by a group of villagers in Ranga Reddy district after being accused of practising black magic, police said. The woman, identified as P Venkatamma, was allegedly tied to a neem tree near a place of worship in Nomula village on September 23. Police have booked 14 people in connection with the incident, TOI reported.
Family Members Also Attacked
According to police, Venkatamma's husband, P Pochaiah, and son, P Mahesh, were also allegedly assaulted when they tried to intervene. Mahesh told police that the accused punched and kicked him and damaged the rear windshield of his car. Venkatamma suffered injuries to her left arm and leg, according to reports. The alleged attackers reportedly accused her of using black magic against people in the village.
Police Register Case Against 14
Manchal police registered a case against 14 villagers under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita following the complaint. Ibrahimpatnam ACP KVM Raju said police had picked up one suspect for questioning, while efforts were underway to locate the remaining accused. The police investigation is examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the roles of those named in the complaint.
Incident Came to Light After Videos Circulated
Although the case was registered on September 23, the incident gained wider attention after videos of the alleged assault circulated on social media on Monday.
Police have maintained that allegations of black magic cannot justify violence and that any criminal allegation must be dealt with through the legal process. The investigation is continuing, and the allegations against the accused have not yet been established in court.
