UCC in All 21 NDA States Before 2029, Says Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Sunday that all 21 states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) before the 2029 general elections. Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Shah highlighted the ongoing push for uniform personal laws as a central pillar of the ruling alliance’s governance agenda. He expressed confidence in expanding the law across all NDA-administered jurisdictions after initial rollouts in selected states.

"We introduced the Uniform Civil Code in several states. The Uniform Civil Code proposes replacing existing religion-based personal laws with a standardized legal framework governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and succession for all citizens, regardless of religious affiliation. Proponents argue the measure ensures gender equality and constitutional uniformity, while critics contend it disrupts religious freedom and personal traditions.
