Uttarakhand Rains: 5 Killed in Almora, 141 Roads Shut As Landslides Hit Nainital

Heavy rainfall disrupted life across Uttarakhand on Tuesday, with landslides blocking major routes in Nainital and other parts of Kumaon, while swollen rivers and streams raised concerns in several districts. As many as 141 roads were reported closed across Kumaon, while five people were killed in separate rain-related incidents in Almora district, according to India Today report.

The situation has affected road connectivity, particularly around Nainital, where landslides blocked both major routes connecting the hill town with Haldwani and Kaladhungi. Heavy rain triggered landslides on the Haldwani-Nainital highway, with falling boulders and debris blocking stretches of the road. Two cars were caught in separate landslide incidents, although no casualties were reported in those incidents.

The landslide between Do Gaon and Jyolikot left commuters stranded as debris continued to fall from the rain-soaked slopes. Authorities have deployed JCB machines to clear debris from three key routes — the Haldwani-Nainital Road, Haldwani-Bhimtal Road and Haldwani-Kaladhungi Road. 141 Roads Closed Across Kumaon

The disruption extends beyond Nainital. As many as 141 roads have been closed across Kumaon, including routes in Pithoragarh, Almora, Bageshwar and Champawat. The affected roads include border roads, national highways, state highways and routes connecting remote villages. The closures have disrupted transport and isolated some communities. In Haldwani, several rural routes have also been affected, with residents of some villages forced to use significantly longer alternative routes.

Rivers Swell, Flood Concerns Rise

Continuous rainfall has pushed water levels higher in rivers and streams across the region. The Gaula River, which flows through Haldwani, has swollen significantly, while several other waterways are reported to be close to or above their danger marks.

The India Meteorological Department's Nainital forecast warned of thunderstorms with lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall on September 1, followed by moderate to heavy rainfall in the following days. The weather conditions have prompted authorities to maintain heightened vigilance in vulnerable areas.

Five Killed in Almora

Almora district has also reported fatalities linked to the heavy rain. Five people were killed in separate incidents after being buried under debris, according to India Today. Three people died in Hawalbagh block, while two Nepali labourers were killed in a separate incident at Dhar Ki Tuni after being trapped under debris.

Following the deaths, the Almora district administration placed officials on alert and announced the closure of schools from Anganwadi centres through Class 12 for September 2.

Administration Steps Up Response

District authorities are monitoring the situation and deploying machinery to clear roads where possible. Residents have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.

In Nainital, road-clearance operations are continuing on key routes, while authorities are keeping a close watch on rivers, streams and areas vulnerable to landslides. The current spell of heavy rain comes as the monsoon season approaches its expected withdrawal period. However, weather conditions in Uttarakhand remain unsettled, with further rainfall forecast over the next several days.
