A viral video showing a late-night party with music and alleged alcohol consumption on boats in the Ganga River in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi has triggered a police investigation, with authorities examining possible violations of safety and administrative restrictions. The incident reportedly took place on Sunday, April 5, during the religious observance of Sheetla Ashtami.

Officials said the Varanasi boat party viral videos circulating on social media appear to show individuals dancing to DJ music and consuming beer on boats in the middle of the river, raising concerns about enforcement of existing bans and overall safety. Bhagalpur Tragedy: 3 Youths Drown in Ganga While Trying to Save Aunt During Bath at Dhodha Ghat.

Men Seen Drinking, Dancing to DJ Songs on Boats on River Ganga

The event coincided with a traditional gathering of the local boatmen community, who travel by boat to offer prayers at the Sheetla Mata Temple Adalpura Dham. The annual ritual involves carrying offerings and singing devotional songs dedicated to Sheetla Mata.

According to news media reports, nearly 4,000 boatmen participated, using around 1,500 boats decorated with lights and sound systems. While the occasion is primarily religious, authorities said some activities seen in the viral videos appear to deviate from the customary practices. Reels Craze Turns Fatal in Uttarkashi: Woman Drowns in Ganga While Filming Social Media Reel at Manikarnika Ghat; Video of Tragic Incident Surfaces.

Alleged Violations of Safety Rules

Local administration in Varanasi has imposed restrictions on DJ music and parties on boats due to safety and environmental concerns. The presence of loud music systems and alleged alcohol consumption has raised questions about compliance with these regulations.

Officials noted that such activities can pose risks, particularly during large gatherings on the river, where overcrowding and limited monitoring may increase the likelihood of accidents.

Police Investigation Underway

The Uttar Pradesh Police has initiated a probe into the incident. Assistant Commissioner of Police Atul Anjan confirmed that authorities have taken cognisance of the viral video and are working to identify those involved.

Police said appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, including whether any laws or administrative orders were violated.

A local organisation, Maa Ganga Nishadraj Seva Nyay, has submitted a memorandum to officials seeking action against individuals responsible for the alleged misconduct. The group emphasised that the actions of a few should not be attributed to the entire boatmen community, which traditionally observes the occasion in a devotional manner.
