A man posing as a priest allegedly extorted INR 4,000 from a devotee in the name of facilitating darshan at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi. After the incident was brought to the attention of local police, intervened, following which the accused returned the money to the devotee. A video of the incident has since circulated on social media. According to reports, the devotee complained after being charged for darshan by the self-styled priest. During the intervention, police questioned the accused, with an officer heard saying, "Sari duniya free mein Darshan kar rahi hai, tum Bahar ke aadami se INR 4000 le liye." The accused subsequently refunded the entire amount in the presence of police. The incident comes amid an ongoing crackdown by Varanasi Police against fake priests and touts allegedly exploiting pilgrims around the Kashi Vishwanath Temple by promising special or VIP darshan in exchange for money.
