The Vasai-Virar region has seen a concerning rise in crimes against women in recent years, the Hindustan Times reported. According to a 2024 report, the area registered an average of one case of rape, assault, or abuse daily since January of that year.

Factors contributing to the increased risk include vulnerable teens, repeat offenders, unmonitored lodges, social media influence, and inadequate street lighting. Community leaders have repeatedly called for enhanced police presence and better infrastructure to improve safety for women and children.

Under Indian law, public indecency and obscene acts are punishable under Section 294 of the Indian Penal Code, which penalises obscene acts or songs in public places. Additionally, offenses involving minors can attract stricter penalties under various provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
