What Is E-PRAAPTI? EPFO May Launch Portal To Find, Link and Claim Old PF Savings
EPFO may launch E-PRAAPTI by August-end to help subscribers trace and claim money in old or inactive PF accounts. The Aadhaar-based platform is undergoing back-end testing and will initially target members with old Member IDs, enabling account linking, UAN generation, withdrawal and verification through a digital process.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is expected to launch E-PRAAPTI by the end of August to help subscribers trace, link and claim money lying in old or inactive Provident Fund (PF) accounts. The Aadhaar-based platform is currently undergoing back-end software testing to establish a stable national database before its nationwide rollout.
The proposed system addresses a long-standing problem involving PF savings that members may have lost track of after changing jobs, particularly in the period before the introduction of the Universal Account Number (UAN). More than 30.91 lakh inoperative EPF accounts held about INR 9,330 crore in unclaimed savings as of March 31, 2026, according to government data. What is E-PRAAPTI?
Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya first announced the platform in April 2026. E-PRAAPTI stands for EPF Aadhaar-Based Access Portal for Tracking Inoperative Accounts. Mandaviya described it as “a dedicated digital platform to facilitate identification, tracking, UAN linking and activation of old EPF accounts.”
He further said the portal would provide “a streamlined Aadhaar-based authentication mechanism” that will allow members to securely access old EPF accounts that are not linked to a Universal Account Number (UAN), update their profiles, and complete UAN linking and activation. The platform is designed to replace much of the existing manual verification process with Aadhaar-based authentication, potentially reducing paperwork and the need to depend on former employers for verification.
Why is EPFO launching the portal?
The initiative comes against the backdrop of a substantial amount of PF money remaining unclaimed in inoperative accounts. According to government data, 30,91,862 inoperative EPF accounts held around INR 9,330 crore as of March 31, 2026. The previous year, 31.83 lakh such accounts held about INR 10,181 crore.
An EPF account is classified as inoperative under the applicable rules when there are no fresh contributions for three consecutive years. The EPFO currently has nearly eight crore active members contributing every month through 7.89 lakh establishments.
Who will benefit from E-PRAAPTI?
The initial version of E-PRAAPTI will primarily target members who still have their old Member Identification Numbers (MIDs).
MIDs were the individual PF account identifiers used before the UAN system was introduced in October 2014. Members who accumulated PF savings under older account numbers may have difficulty linking those balances to their current PF accounts, particularly if they changed employers over the years.
The initial member-ID-based approach is intended to allow EPFO to roll out the system in a controlled manner before expanding its scope.
How will E-PRAAPTI work?
The proposed digital process will involve several steps:
- Aadhaar-Based Authentication: Members will be able to log in using Aadhaar-based authentication to search for old or scattered PF deposits without initially submitting full physical documentation.
- Online Application: Subscribers will complete an online form with their EPF details and other information needed to process the request.
- Automatic Merger or Withdrawal: If the system identifies a match between an old MID and an existing UAN, it is expected to process the request to merge the old PF account with the current account or facilitate withdrawal, subject to eligibility conditions.
- New UAN: If a member has an old MID but does not have a UAN, the portal is expected to generate a new UAN for future transactions.
- Verification of Unmatched Cases: If a member does not have or cannot provide an old MID, the application will be forwarded to the concerned EPFO office for identity verification before the claim is processed.
E-PRAAPTI rollout will be phased
EPFO plans to begin with members who possess their old Member IDs. Speaking about the rollout in April, Mandaviya said, “In the initial phase, the portal will be member ID-based, ensuring a secure and efficient rollout while delivering immediate benefits to a large segment of members who possess their member IDs.”
He added that the platform's scope is expected to expand in later phases to cover members who may not remember or have access to their old Member IDs. This means members who have lost or forgotten their historical PF account numbers may not have access to the full functionality immediately after launch.
What changes for PF subscribers?
If launched as planned, E-PRAAPTI could make it easier for members to identify older PF balances without relying as heavily on former employers or repeated visits to EPFO offices.
The system is also intended to simplify the process of linking eligible old accounts with an existing UAN or initiating a claim where withdrawal is permitted.
However, the platform is still undergoing back-end testing, and its final functionality and rollout timeline will depend on the completion of that process.
E-PRAAPTI is being developed as a dedicated digital route for EPFO members trying to recover or consolidate savings held in older PF accounts. With INR 9,330 crore reported in 30.91 lakh inoperative accounts as of March 31, 2026, the proposed portal is aimed at addressing a significant backlog of unclaimed retirement savings.
