The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is expected to launch E-PRAAPTI, a dedicated digital platform designed to help subscribers trace, link, and claim money lying in old or inactive Provident Fund (PF) accounts, by the end of August. Addressing Billions in Unclaimed Provident Fund Savings

The upcoming portal aims to solve a long-standing challenge within India’s social security system. Official estimates indicate that more than 30.91 lakh inoperative EPF accounts hold approximately INR 9,330 crore in unclaimed savings. EPFO 3.0 Explained: When Will UPI and ATM PF Withdrawals Start, How Much Can EPF Members Withdraw?
Under EPFO guidelines, an account is classified as inoperative when no fresh contributions are made for three consecutive years. With nearly eight crore active members contributing monthly across 7.89 lakh registered establishments, millions of workers historically lost track of their savings when changing jobs, particularly prior to the digitisation of account records. EPFO: How To Check Old and New Claims, Access Service History on Revamped Portal.

What is the E-PRAAPTI Platform?

First announced by Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya, E-PRAAPTI (EPF Aadhaar-Based Access Portal for Tracking Inoperative Accounts) provides a streamlined, Aadhaar-authenticated mechanism.
The portal focuses primarily on members holding older Member Identification Numbers (MIDs)—the individual account identifiers used before the EPFO introduced the Universal Account Number (UAN) system in October 2014. By shifting authentication to Aadhaar verification, the platform replaces cumbersome manual paperwork and reduces reliance on former employers for verification.

How the New System Will Work

Once operational, the E-PRAAPTI workflow will operate through several key steps:

  • Aadhaar-Based Authentication: Members can securely log in using Aadhaar credentials to search for untraced or scattered PF deposits without needing to submit physical documentation upfront.
  • Online Application: Users complete a simplified digital form detailing their employment history and available account information.
  • Automated Merging or Withdrawal: If the portal identifies a match between an old MID and an active UAN, it will automatically initiate an account merge or enable a withdrawal request, subject to standard eligibility rules.
  • UAN Generation: For members with an old MID who do not currently possess a UAN, the system will generate a new UAN for future transactions.
  • Off-Line Office Verification: In cases where a member does not have or remember their MID, the request will be routed to the relevant regional EPFO office for official identity verification.

Phased Rollout Strategy

In its initial rollout phase, E-PRAAPTI will focus on members who retain their old Member IDs to ensure a smooth transition. Subsequent updates are planned to expand portal capabilities, enabling members who have forgotten or lost access to their historical Member IDs to trace locked-in savings.
