What Is the Fare of India’s First Hydrogen Train?

India has launched its first hydrogen-powered passenger train on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, with ticket fares starting at just INR 5 and going up to INR 25. Flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the train uses indigenous hydrogen fuel cell technology, carries around 2,600 passengers and produces only water vapour and heat, supporting cleaner and sustainable rail transport.

India has taken a step toward cleaner rail transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered passenger train. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the country's maiden hydrogen train from Jind railway station in Haryana on Friday, July 17, marking the introduction of indigenous hydrogen fuel cell technology into passenger rail operations. The train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway, with ticket prices starting at INR 5.

The launch places India among a select group of countries that have introduced hydrogen-powered passenger rail services. The project is aimed at promoting low-emission public transport while reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels. The hydrogen-powered service is also designed to remain affordable for daily commuters. India’s First Hydrogen Train Launched: Route, Speed, Timings and Other Details.

The starting fare is lower than the platform ticket charged at many railway stations, making the service one of the most affordable options on the Indian Railways network. PM Narendra Modi Flags Off India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train, Marking Milestone in Green Rail Transport (Video).

Route, Stops and Travel Time

The hydrogen-powered train will operate between Jind Junction and Sonipat, covering nearly 90 kilometres in approximately two hours. The train has been approved to operate at a maximum operational speed of 75 kmph, while its design speed is 110 kmph.

Stations on the Route

  • Jind Junction
  • Jind City
  • Pandu Pindara
  • Lalit Khera Halt
  • Bhambhewa
  • Isapur Kheri Halt
  • Butana Halt
  • Khandrai Halt
  • Rabrah Halt
  • Lath
  • Mohana
  • Barwasni Halt
  • Sonipat

The 10-coach train can accommodate around 2,600 passengers, making it suitable for regular commuters along the route.

How the Hydrogen Train Works

Unlike conventional trains powered by diesel engines or electricity supplied through overhead wires, the new train generates electricity onboard using hydrogen fuel cells.

Inside the fuel cell, hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce electricity. The process emits only water vapour and heat, making it a zero-emission alternative for passenger rail transport. Hydrogen required for operations will be supplied through a dedicated production and refuelling facility established at Jind.

Key Features of India's First Hydrogen Train

The train includes several features designed for both operational efficiency and passenger safety.

Key specifications include:

  • 10-coach hydrogen fuel cell-based trainset
  • Two hydrogen-powered Driving Power Cars
  • Eight trailer coaches
  • 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system
  • Passenger capacity of around 2,600
  • Maximum operational speed of 75 kmph
  • Design speed of 110 kmph
  • Advanced systems to detect hydrogen leaks, smoke, flames and overheating
  • Operates without conventional overhead electric wires

India's Largest Railway Hydrogen Facility

The project has also led to the development of India's largest railway hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at Jind. According to the government, the facility can store nearly 3,000 kg of hydrogen and has been built in line with internationally accepted safety standards. It has also undergone independent safety assessments before the start of passenger operations.

India Joins Countries Using Hydrogen Rail Technology

With the launch of the service, India joins a small group of countries that have introduced hydrogen-powered rail technology.

Hydrogen trains are already operating or undergoing trials in countries including Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Japan, China and the United States. The launch marks another step in Indian Railways' efforts to adopt cleaner transportation technologies and expand sustainable public transport infrastructure.
