Why 3-Day Bank Strike Was Deferred and What Unions Said
The three-day nationwide bank strike was deferred after a late-night agreement between the UFBU and IBA. A joint committee will review a five-day workweek and PLI schemes, allowing all public and private banks to resume normal operations. 'A high-level committee of the IBA and UFBU will be formed immediately to deliberate on the issue of declaring the remaining Saturdays as holidays,' UFBU said.
A massive disruption to India's banking sector was averted following a crucial late-night agreement between labor leaders and banking management, bringing relief to millions of customers ahead of the financial half-year closing. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) officially called off its planned three-day nationwide strike - initially scheduled to begin Monday - following a breakthrough virtual meeting held late Sunday evening with representatives of the Indian Banks' Association (IBA).
The Late-Night Conciliation and Joint Committee
The decision to defer the strike came out of an urgent virtual dialogue convened at 9:30 PM on Sunday, bringing together six executive representatives from the IBA and seven key delegates from the bank unions. Are Banks Open or Closed Today, September 28, 2026? Bank Strike Update.
Official Statement Issues by UFBU
The primary catalyst for suspending the industrial action was the formal commitment to address long-pending administrative grievances. Most notably, both parties agreed to immediately establish a high-level joint committee to evaluate the implementation of a five-day workweek. Under the current system, public and private sector banks remain closed only on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. The newly formed committee has been tasked with exploring operational alternatives to declare all Saturdays as holidays while keeping customer convenience and workflow continuity in mind.
What UFBU Said?
“A high-level committee of the IBA and UFBU will be formed immediately to deliberate on the issue of declaring the remaining Saturdays as holidays. This committee will explore all possible alternatives, discuss with all the stakeholders, and work out a solution acceptable to all the stakeholders, more importantly, the customers,” the UFBU said in a statement, reports PTI. Union Stance on the PLI Scheme and Residual Demands
Apart from the five-day work structure, unions had raised strong objections regarding structural policies implemented by financial authorities. Discussions specifically targeted the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme introduced for Scale IV and above officers. Union leadership argued that the current framework disproportionately favors senior management over regular workforce cadres. Under the terms of the Sunday night understanding, the IBA agreed to open formal talks with the unions to propose modifications to the government. Additionally, both bodies committed to resolving pending matters listed in the historical bilateral minutes dating back to March 8, 2024. Normal Operations Resume for Customers
With the strike action deferred, public sector, regional rural, and private bank branches resumed normal working hours, ensuring that regular teller services, clearing houses, and corporate financial networks faced no holiday-related backlogs. Union representatives emphasised that industrial action was only ever considered as a last resort when formal agreements experienced prolonged delays, and expressed optimism that the newly established joint committee will chart a balanced path forward for both employees and account holders.
