New Delhi, March 10: The Election Commission on Sunday announced the polling dates for the 17th Lok Sabha Elections. The polling for the Lok Sabha for the 543 seats will take place in Seven (7) Phases from April 11 to May 19, 2019 while the counting of votes will take place on May 23, 2019. The polling in Assam would take place in Three (3) Phases from April 11 to April 23, 2019. The Elections will take place on April 11, April 18 and April 23 for 14 seats. Previously in 2014, the voting took place in three phases on April 7, 12 and 24 respectively.

The election dates were announced by three Election Commissioners – Sunil Arora (Chief EC), Ashok Lavasa and Sushil Chandra – in the national capital. The Commissioners informed that adequate security arrangements have been done for the smooth conduction of polls in the country. In Assam, the main political parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections for 14 seats include –Indian National Congress (INC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Asom Gana Parishad, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and others. In the last Lok Sabha Elections in 2014, Bharatiya Janata Party won seven seats by securing 36.50 per cent share, while ruling Congress lost in the state by managing to win only three seats with 29.60 per cent vote share. Another party that secured seats in the state was AIUDF, which clinched three seats by gaining 14.80 per cent votes, while AGP failed to open their account. An individual, however, won in one seat. According to the ECI data, Assam had 1,88,85,274 number of total voters during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, out of which 97,87,209 were males, and 90,98,065 were females. However, only 78,76,763 males and 72,09,120 females exercised their democratic rights. Due to this, the male voting turnout was 80.48 per cent, and the female voter turnout was 79.24 per cent. Combinedly, the total voting percent was 79.88 per cent (ECI, 2014). It is almost expected that there would be a rise in the number of voters in 2019, as the ECI had declared that they would be updating the list soon.
