BBMP Mayor Election Result 2019: BJP's Gautam Kumar Secured Top Post in Bengaluru Municipal Corporation, Defeats Congress Candidate by 17 Votes

Bengaluru, October 1: In another setback for the Congress–Janata Dal Secular (JDS) alliance, the post of Bengaluru’s mayor also been wrested by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP). Gautam Kumar was elected the mayor of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Tuesday. Kumar defeated the Congress candidate Satyanarayana with 17 votes. The voting began before noon, and the results were declared by 1 pm, reported NDTV. Councillors, MPs, MLAs and MLCs within limits of Bengaluru city cast their votes. Earlier, the Congress-JDS alliance had held the posts of mayor and deputy mayor for the last four years. BBMP's One Home, One Dog Policy Draws Flak.

The post of mayor was held by the Congress, while, the post of deputy mayor was with the JDS for the last four year. Though the BJP had greater numbers in the corporation than both the opposition parties, but their alliance had stopped them from getting control of the corporation. Disqualification of several MLAs from the alliance gave the opportunity to the BJP to get hold of the post. The Bengaluru mayor’s term is only for one year.

However, after Kumar was elected as the mayor of the city, several Pro-Kannada organisation Kannada Chalavali (Vatal Paksha) staged a protest in the city alleging that an "outsider" has been made the city mayor. Kumar is originally from Rajasthan.
