Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has publicly countered Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s recent statements regarding Ayodhya’s historic Hanumangarhi Temple, asserting that namaz was never offered at the site. Speaking to reporters in Gonda, Singh strongly refuted claims that previous non-BJP governments had permitted Islamic prayers within the temple premises, calling the narrative factually incorrect. He urged the public to familiarize themselves with the true history of the structural complex.
"Namaz was never performed at Hanumangarhi... it is wrong to say that," Singh stated. "People should know that this Hanumangarhi was built by a Muslim. It is mentioned on a stone inscription there." The controversy emerged shortly after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath targeted opposition parties during a public address. The Chief Minister claimed that past administrations led by the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Indian National Congress had permitted namaz to be conducted within the Hanumangarhi Temple complex. Historically, while the temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and remains a central seat of the Naga Sadhus, local accounts and historical texts frequently highlight that land grants and financial support for Hanumangarhi's construction and expansion were provided by Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula and Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula of Awadh during the 18th century. Local administrative officials and temple trusts have not issued an official response regarding the stone inscriptions cited by the former MP.
