A CCTV video showing Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) corporator Ramesh Mhatre allegedly assaulting a woman doctor and other hospital staff at a KDMC-run hospital in Dombivli has triggered widespread outrage. However while talking to NDTV's Shiv Aroor, Ramesh Mhatre has denied hitting the doctor, claiming that he only struck her mobile phone, while expressing regret over the incident.

The alleged assault took place at a Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) hospital after a dispute over the availability of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) beds. Hospital officials said the confrontation escalated after a patient’s family was advised to consider another facility due to the unavailability of NICU beds. Shastrinagar Hospital Protest: Routine Services Halted Following Attack on Medical Staff by Corporator Ramesh Mhatre.

Mhatre rejected allegations that he physically attacked the woman doctor, saying his action was directed at her phone and not at her.

He also questioned the conduct of doctors, alleging that patients were not receiving proper attention at the hospital. While denying assaulting the doctor, he expressed regret over the incident. The controversy began after CCTV footage from the hospital surfaced online, showing a group of people confronting medical staff inside a room. Maharashtra: Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre Assaults Doctors and Nurses at Shastrinagar Hospital, Video Surfaces.

The CCTV footage allegedly shows Mhatre and a group of men entering the hospital premises and confronting doctors and staff members. The video shows a woman doctor attempting to use her mobile phone during the confrontation. She is seen moving behind a desk as some individuals try to take the phone from her.

The footage then shows the corporator allegedly striking in her direction, after which the phone falls from her hand. The confrontation continues for several minutes, with other hospital staff also seen being attacked.

FIR Against Corporator Ramesh Mhatre

Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation Commissioner Abhinay Goyal said an FIR has been registered against Mhatre for allegedly attacking doctors and medical staff while they were on duty. Following the incident, hospital employees gathered in large numbers and held a protest, demanding action against the corporator from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

According to a hospital official, the incident followed a dispute involving the unavailability of NICU beds. The family of a pregnant woman was reportedly informed that the newborn might require NICU care. Since all NICU beds at the hospital were occupied, doctors advised the family to consider shifting to another hospital, following which the situation escalated.

After the CCTV footage circulated on social media, the United Doctors Front condemned the alleged attack and said incidents of violence against healthcare workers are becoming increasingly common.

The organisation said the incident was not only an attack on an individual doctor but also raised concerns about the safety of healthcare workers and the healthcare system. Authorities are investigating the allegations, while further action will depend on the outcome of the inquiry and legal proceedings.
