Jammu And Kashmir Municipal Elections 2018 Results: Congress Wins Big in Valley, BJP Dominant in Jammu

While the Congress won maximum number of seats in urban local body elections in Kashmir valley, the BJP emerged dominant in Jammu region. In Kashmir region, the Congress won 74 wards, whereas BJP bagged 22 wards. Independent candidates were elected from 60 wards.

In Jammu region, BJP won 212 out of 520 wards, while the Congress won 110 wards. Independent candidates were elected from 185 wards. JKNPP candidates were declared winner from 13 wards.

Out of the 208 wards of urban local bodies in Kashmir valley, the Congress has won 74 wards. BJP bagged 22 wards, whereas independent candidates were elected from 60 wards. Congress has won 79 wards unopposed, BJP 75 and independent 71.

Overall, the Congress secured victory on 153 wards in Kashmir valley. BJP candidates were declared winner from 97 wards. 131 wards went to independent candidates.

The BJP has won 212 out of 520 wards in municipal polls in Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir. Congress won 110 wards, whereas independent candidates were elected from 185 wards. JKNPP candidates were declared winner from 13 wards.

The BJP has failed to open its account in Jammu and Kashmir's Ladakh region in urban local body elections, according to news agency IANS. Out of the total 26 wards in this region, the Congress bagged all the 13 seats in Leh municipal committee. It also bagged five wards in neighbouring Kargil district.

The results of 94 wards of south Kashmir have been declared so far. The BJP have won on 53 wards, whereas the Congress bagged 28 seats. The BJP has got control of at least four of the 20 civic bodies in the four districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian.

Srinagar, October 20: The counting of votes for the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Elections 2018 is set to take place today and the results would be out soon after. The counting of votes will begin at 9 am and the clear picture is likely to emerge within a couple of hours. Voting took place in four phases on October 8, 10, 13 and 16 and a dismal total voter turnout of 35.1 percent was recorded in the state amid boycott call by the two main parties. The PDP, as well as the National Conference, had boycotted the civic body polls in Jammu and Kashmir. The CPI-M had also stayed away from the polls. Those contesting the polls included the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Independent candidates. Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Elections 2018: Despite Terror Threats and Boycott Call By PDP, Highest Voters Turnout in Kathua.

A total of 1145 wards in Jammu and Kashmir zones had gone to polls in four phases. Voting took place via Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The Election Commission also provided voting by the migrants by means of postal ballots. A total of 130 nominees have been elected unopposed, out of which nearly 60 are from Kashmir Valley.

The maximum voter turnout was recorded in the first phase in Jammu and Kashmir (56.7 percent), while least voter turnout was registered during the fourth phase (4.2 percent) and most voting was recorded in Jammu. Municipal polls were last held in Jammu and Kashmir in 2005.

Security has been tightened across the state for the counting of votes. Following the municipal polls will be Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat elections, which will be held in nine phases between November 17 and December 11. The Panchayat polls will also be boycotted by the NC and PDP over the issue of Article 35A.
