The Election CommissionĀ on Thursday declared the results of assembly bypolls in Mizoram, Meghalaya and Nagaland. A total of three legislative constituencies were contested across these three states during the general elections 2019. In Meghalaya'sĀ Selsella assembly constituency, theĀ by-election was necessitated by the death of sittingĀ CongressĀ legislatorĀ Clement MarakĀ on October 8, 2018.

Marak's widowĀ June ElianaĀ R. Marak is contesting the bypoll on theĀ CongressĀ ticket against the rulingĀ National People's PartyĀ Ferlin C.A. Sangma, the United Democratic Party's Sayeedullah Nongrum and the Bharatiya Janata Party's Adorsho Sangma.

In Nagaland's Aonglenden assembly constituency, the bypoll was necessitated due to death of NDPP legislator Imtikumzuk in September 2018. OppositionĀ Naga People's FrontĀ (NPF) Toshipokba Longkumer andĀ National People's PartyĀ (NPP) Tinujungshi Longkumer withdrew theirĀ nomination papersĀ for contesting days before the polls.

BothĀ had declared their support to ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party's (NDPP) nominee Sharingain Longkumer.

In Mizoram's Aizawl West - I, the by-election wasĀ calledĀ by the State Election Commission after Zoram Peopleā€™s Movement (ZPM) leader Lalduhawma vacated the seat. In the assembly polls held in November-December last year, Lalduhawma had won two seats. He decided to retain theĀ  Serchip assembly seat while withdrawing his MLA status from Aizawl West - I.
