New Delhi, January 20: After passing a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act, the Kerala government has decided to carry out the process of updating the National Population Register or NPR. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held a special cabinet meeting on Monday and it was decided that NPR won't be conducted in the state. "This has been decided and it will inform to the Census Directorate that certain questions which will go for the preparations of the NPR will not be done here," Kerala's Local Administration Minister AC Moideen told media after the cabinet meeting. Last month, the state assembly passed a resolution demanding the scrapping of the Citizenship Amendment Act. The resolution was moved by the Chief Minister.

Last week, the Kerala government moved the Supreme Court against the CAA, seeking to declare it "violative of the principles of equality, freedom and secularism enshrined in the Constitution". A resolution was also passed by the Kerala assembly against the legislation. Following in the southern State’s footsteps, the Punjab assembly on Friday passed a resolution demanding to scrap the contentious law.
