New Delhi, July 10: Rahul Gandhi, who has stepped down as Congress President, now has 10 million followers on his Twitter handle. Rahul Gandhi, in a tweet, thanked his supporters and said he will celebrate this "milestone" with Congress workers in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. Gandhi will hold a closed-door meeting with party workers. This will be his first visit to Amethi after a humiliating defeat in the Lok Sabha.

"10 Million Twitter followers - thank you to each and every one of you! I will celebrate the milestone in Amethi,  where I will be meeting our Congress workers & supporters today (sic)," Gandhi tweeted on Wednesday. In Amethi, he will attend a meeting of Congress workers at Nirmala Institute of Women’s Education, Gauriganj, at 12 noon to ascertain the reason behind his party’s humiliating defeat in the general elections and will take feedback from them. Rahul Gandhi Summoned by Surat Court For 'All Thieves With Modi Surname' Remark.

The Congress leader will also pay a private condolence visit to Dwinda Prasad Dwivedi’s family in district’s Babhanpur village. Dwivedi, a member of the party died a few months back after a prolonged illness. Gandhi's visit is an indication that he has not given up on Amethi which used to be his family's bastion till he lost the polls. He held the seat for the past 15 years. The Gandhi scion, Member of Lok Sabha from Wayanad in Kerala, became the Congress president in 2017. He offered to step down from his post at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on May 25, taking moral responsibility for the Congress’ abysmal performance in the 17th Lok Sabha Elections.

While the Congress party could increase its tally to 52 from 44, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, 303 seats on its own and 352 with its allies. Congress was wiped out in 18 states and Union Territories. Last week, Gandhi had put a letter on Twitter making his resignation public and empowering the CWC to choose his successor.
