The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led ruling coalition in Tamil Nadu was officially named the "Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance" on Wednesday, following its second alliance coordination meeting held at the TVK party headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai.
The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by TVK founder and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Key leaders from major coalition partners attended the session, including representatives from the Indian National Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). The coordination meeting focused on structuring the ruling alliance's operational framework. Discussions centered on drafting a Common Minimum Programme, constituting a joint steering committee, and defining the coalition's shared political strategy.
However, the meeting highlighted growing fractures within the governing bloc, as leaders from the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] skipped the session. The Left parties have opted to maintain an independent stance while offering issue-based support to sustain the TVK government, declining formal integration into the coalition framework without cabinet representation.
The renaming and organizational efforts follow internal disagreements regarding the alliance's long-term national trajectory for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Political friction recently emerged between TVK and Congress leaders over potential Prime Ministerial endorsements, with TVK ministers suggesting a Tamil Nadu leader for the nation's top office, prompting Congress members to demand support for Rahul Gandhi. Despite the recent political friction, alliance leaders met in Chennai to project unity, displaying partner logos and formalizing the coalition's new identity ahead of upcoming state political engagements.
