UP MLC Election Results 2026: Akhilesh Yadav Says ‘Double Loss for Double-Engine Government’ as SP Wins 5 Seats
Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC) election results, describing the outcome as a “double loss for the double-engine government” and claiming that it signalled a challenge for the ruling party ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC) election results, describing the outcome as a “double loss for the double-engine government” and claiming that it signalled a challenge for the ruling party ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister called the BJP a “flop show” and alleged that the results reflected growing dissatisfaction with the party's policies, particularly among teachers, graduates and young people concerned about employment opportunities. The BJP won six of the 11 seats contested in the MLC elections, while the Samajwadi Party secured five, according to reports published on October 29. The results marked an improvement for the SP compared with the previous election, when it held three of these seats.
Akhilesh Yadav Links MLC Results to 2027 UP Elections
Yadav argued that the results had set the stage for the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, scheduled for 2027. He credited the SP's performance to its PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) coalition, which refers to backward classes, Dalits and minorities.
The SP chief also alleged irregularities and administrative interference in the counting process in certain constituencies. He maintained that the party's electoral gains reflected opposition to the BJP's policies and expressed confidence in the SP's prospects in the next Assembly elections. These allegations represent Yadav's claims and have not been independently established.
BJP Suffers Setbacks in Key Constituencies
The MLC election results saw the SP make gains in several constituencies, including Lucknow Graduates, Agra-Aligarh Teachers and Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates. The party also retained the Varanasi Teachers' seat, while its candidate Ashutosh Sinha won the Varanasi Graduates' constituency. The BJP, meanwhile, retained six seats, including the Meerut Graduates, Meerut Teachers, Agra Graduates, Lucknow Teachers, Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers and Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers constituencies.
The results are politically significant because they come months before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Although MLC elections involving teachers and graduates do not directly reflect the preferences of the entire electorate, the outcome offers political parties an indication of their organisational strength among these voter groups.
Counting Disputes Add to Political Tensions
The election process was also marked by allegations of irregularities and disputes over counting in some constituencies, including Varanasi and Gorakhpur-Faizabad.
In Varanasi, counting continued for an extended period, with both the BJP and SP raising objections and demanding scrutiny of the process. Yadav urged party workers to remain at the counting centre until they received the official victory certificate.
The BJP's overall tally of six seats remained unchanged from the previous election, while the SP increased its representation from three seats to five. The result gives the opposition party an electoral boost as political preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.
