Kolkata, May 12: Polling for eight constituencies in the sixth phase for West Bengal began at 7 am on Sunday and concluded in the evening. Voting took place at Tamluk, Kanthi, Ghatal, Jhargram, Medinipur, Purulia, Bankura and Bishnupur constituencies. A total of 80.16% per cent voter turnout was recorded, according to the update released by the Election Commission.

Despite reports of poll violence, attack on a Union Minister, clashes outside polling booths, hurling of bombs and EVM snags, the average voter turnout was more than 73.97 percent in the fifth phase. Meanwhile, EC had ordered an FIR against BJP's Ghatal candidate Bharati Ghosh for poll violation.

With incidences of alleged misbehaviour with a woman TMC worker by Barrackpore BJP candidate Arjun Singh during the fifth phase and allegations of booth capturing by various parties, the Election Commission deployed an adequate number of para companies, central forces and state police personnel. West Bengal Lok Sabha Elections 2019 Phase 5: Total Voter Turnout In State Was 73.97 Per Cent

Considering the previous experience, the Special police observer for West Bengal Vivek Dubey had announced to mobilise adequate companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the state for fair elections at polling stations. Apart from this, innumerable Quick Response Teams (QRT) of the central forces were on standby to reach any place where there is a disruption of law and order in West Bengal.

According to the EC's press release, 83 candidates are contesting for seven LS seats. In this phase, 1,33,69,749 electorates are going to decide the fate of 83 contesting candidates by exercising their democratic rights at 15,428 polling stations. The polling per cent recorded in the first phase for two seats was 69.44 per cent. In the second round of the polls in West Bengal, a total voter turnout of 75.27 per cent was recorded and for the third phase, it was 69 per cent and for the fourth phase, it was 76 per cent and for the fifth phase it was 73.97 percent. Now with EC more vigilant and more paramilitary forces deployed in each polling station, it is expected that the voter turnout in seven Lok Sabha constituencies would be peaceful. The results would be declared on May 23.
