Kolkata, May 6: The polling for seven constituencies in the fifth phase for the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal began at 7 am on Monday and concluded at 6 pm. Voting took place at Bangaon, Barrackpore, Howrah, Uluberia, Serampore, Hooghly and Arambagh constituencies. Despite reports of violence, attack on a Union Minister, clashes outside polling booths, hurling of bombs and EVM snags, the average voter turnout was more than 76 percent in the fourth phase. The total voter turnout for the fifth place was 73.97 per cent in the state.

Barrackpore BJP candidate Arjun Singh allegedly misbehaved with a woman TMC worker. However, he said that TMC workers attacked him. Though the Election Commission deployed an adequate number of para companies, central forces and state police personnel, polling at several polling booths were affected due to violence. Considering the previous experience, the Special police observer for West Bengal Vivek Dubey had announced to mobilise 578 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the state for fair elections at polling stations. Apart from this, 142 Quick Response Teams (QRT) of the central forces were on standby to reach any place where there is a disruption of law and order in West Bengal. West Bengal Lok Sabha Elections 2019 Phase 4: Over 76 Percent Voter Turnout Recorded Despite Violence. 

According to the EC's press release, 83 candidates are contesting for seven LS seats. In this phase, 1,16,91,889 electorates decided the fate of 83 contesting candidates by exercising their democratic rights at 13,290 polling stations. The main competition was between candidates from Trinamool Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, Left Front and Congress.

The polling per cent recorded in the first phase for two seats was 69.44 per cent. In the second round of the polls in West Bengal, a total voter turnout of 75.27 per cent was recorded and for the third phase, it was 69 per cent and for the fourth phase, it was 76 per cent. Now with EC more vigilant and more paramilitary forces deployed in each polling station, it is expected that the voter turnout in seven Lok Sabha constituencies would be peaceful. The results would be declared on May 23.
