Why Is Congress Demanding Rajnath Singh’s Resignation?
Congress has demanded Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's resignation, alleging he insulted the martyrs of Operation Sindoor and misled Parliament by claiming the Indian Army suffered no losses. The party also accused the BJP of concealing the identities of six fallen soldiers, while the Defence Ministry rejected the allegations, saying the nation honoured the martyrs at the earliest opportunity.
The Congress on Monday, June 29, demanded the resignation of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, alleging that he insulted the martyrs of "Operation Sindoor" and misled Parliament by stating that the Indian Army had suffered no losses during the operation. The opposition party also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP MPs of supporting what it described as "false" claims made by the Defence Minister.
The controversy intensified after the names of six soldiers martyred during "Operation Sindoor" were released. Congress alleged that the government had concealed the identities of the fallen soldiers for months, while the Defence Ministry rejected the charge, saying the nation had honoured the martyrs at the earliest opportunity and that reports suggesting otherwise were "incorrect."
Congress Seeks Rajnath Singh's Resignation
Why Congress Wants Rajnath Singh to Resign?
Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, Congress Chairman of the Ex-Servicemen Department Col (Retd) Rohit Chaudhary, accompanied by Wing Commander (Retd) Anuma Acharya, accused the Defence Minister of disregarding the sacrifice of soldiers.
"Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has insulted the martyrs of 'Operation Sindoor' and overlooked them. He lied in the House that our soldiers had suffered no loss." Lashing out at the BJP, he alleged that the party talks about soldiers, seeks votes in the name of martyrs, but insults them.
Referring to Rajnath Singh's remarks in Parliament, Col (Retd) Chaudhary said: "When Rajnath Singh was lying in Parliament that no soldier had suffered any loss, BJP MPs were clapping. None of these people have the right to sit in the House. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has insulted the country's Army and soldiers. We demand his resignation. A breach of privilege motion should be brought against him."
He further alleged: "The foundation of the Modi government is built on lies. They have no right to remain in power. The country is asking why it took 13 months for the names of our martyred soldiers to come forward. This is tampering with national security because when a soldier is martyred for the country, his regiment feels pride and his martyrdom sets an example. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP MPs should apologise for supporting the Defence Minister's lies."
Congress Raises Questions on Operation Sindoor
Recalling Operation Sindoor, Col (Retd) Chaudhary criticised the government's handling of the military operation and foreign policy.
"The Modi government missed the opportunity to bring back Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) during 'Operation Sindoor'. Our foreign policy has been extremely weak. We had to send 60 parliamentarians abroad so they could tell the world our side of the story."
Wing Commander (Retd) Anuma Acharya also accused the government of failing to appropriately honour fallen soldiers. "Before the BJP government came to power, there was a tradition that whoever made the supreme sacrifice for the country was publicly honoured with gratitude. But the Modi government, which politicises the Army and soldiers, has repeatedly cheated the country and the soldiers."
She also criticised the government's approach towards Pakistan. "The government showed double standards by playing cricket with the same Pakistan that had inflicted a major wound on us. This was an insult to our martyrs, but this government could not even get Pakistan declared a terrorist country. The Defence Minister should resign."
The Defence Ministry dismissed the Congress allegations and said reports claiming that the sacrifice of six soldiers during Operation Sindoor had only recently been acknowledged were "incorrect."
According to the ministry, the nation had paid homage to the fallen soldiers at the earliest opportunity, well before the reports cited by the Congress.
The exchange has added to the political debate over Operation Sindoor, with the ruling BJP and the Congress offering sharply differing accounts over the government's handling of information related to the soldiers who lost their lives during the operation.
