The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the Sangli civic body polls. In the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation, the BJP won 41 out of 78 seats and the Congress won 20. This victory is also important as the area is considered to be the strong base of Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Mumbai, Aug 3: The results of election to the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation (SMKMC) in western Maharashtra will be declared today. Counting of votes for the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation election results will begin at 10 am. Around 62 per cent polling was registered in SMKMC civic body that went to polls on Wednesday. Catch live updates on the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation election results here.

As many as 451 candidates are in fray for 78 seats in the SMKMC. The main contest is between the alliance of the ruling Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The SMKMC is considered a stronghold of the Congress as its veteran leader, late Patangrao Kadam hailed from the region. The grand old party had won 41 of the 78 seats in the last election. Stakes are high for the Congress as it cannot afford losing its another bastion to the rising BJP a year before Assembly polls in the state.

Besides SMKMC, the eletion results of Jalgaon City Municipal Corporation (JCMC) will also be declared today. In Jalgaon, around 55 per cent voters exercised their franchise on Wednesday. As many as 303 candidates are in the fray for 75 seats in Jalgaon. In Jalgaon, Shiv Sena-BJP have an informal alliance, while Congress-NCP had formed a pre-poll tie-up.
